THIS IS NOT A TEST – TobyMac Review and Giveaway

For over a decade, tobyMac has been a household name for Christian music fans. After being part of the classic trio DC Talk for 13 years, the group broke up and Toby pursued a successful solo career. Between the two groups, he has sold over 10 million albums and has won two Grammys.

TobyMac’s latest album, THIS IS NOT A TEST, features a little bit of pop, rock, rap, reggae, and EDM – Toby does it all. The album opens with “Like a Match,” a sanguine challenge for Christians to share and show Christ’s love. (And “strike it up, like a match, burning for the world to see!”) As I’ve played the music around the house, the family favorite is officially “Backseat Driver.” The song features truDog (Toby’s son) and talks about letting God take control of our lives, and letting go of being a “backseat driver.” (It also kind of reminded me of the Corrie ten Boom quote, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”)
However, my favorite on the album is “Lights Shine Bright (ft Hollyn).” This minimalist piece has a catchy reggae vibe, and a style that reminds me of Lorde. And for those hoping for a DC Talk reunion, you’ve got it! Toby and the gang bring it in “Love Feels Like.” Other guest singers include Hollyn, Capital Kings, NF, and Mr. Talkbox.
As I listen to about the fifth track, I keep thinking to myself: it’s no wonder why tobyMac is one of the biggest names in Christian music, and probably the biggest name in the Christian hip-hop/EDM (electronic dance music) scene. It’s hard to find upbeat music that doesn’t revolve around partying, yet still has a fresh and catchy rhythm. It’s even harder to find any artist that sticks to their original message and morals no matter what fame and fortune throws at them.
I’m proud to say Toby brought his best here, keeping with his Christian roots, yet bringing fresh beats to the mix. On a similar note, I felt this was lyrically stronger than his last album, Eye On It. Throughout the whole album, it felt more energetic (think: perfect workout album), diverse, and complete. It isn’t full of filler material; the content is solid. If you’re a Christian music fan or a tobyMac fan, you won’t be disappointed.
You can buy the CD on Amazon, iTunes, or any physical store that sells Christian music.
The best part? Toby’s record label Capitol CMG gave me a copy for one of my lucky followers! The giveaway ends on September 4, my 17th birthday. (and truDog’s 17th birthday – we share an exact birthday!)
