Merci Suarez Changes Gears Novel Study
Grab this novel study for Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Meg Medina, the 2019 Newbery Award winner!
Merci Suarez is a Cuban-American girl growing up in Florida. She lives in a multigenerational home with her grandparents, aunt, and younger cousins. She’s a sixth grader, and she and her brother attend Seaward Pines Academy on scholarship.
The first half focuses on her in middle school; bullying, facing mean girls and other drama. The second half, which I really enjoyed, focuses on her coming to terms with her grandpa’s Alzheimer’s and balancing her family’s traditions with those of her peers.
It took me a while to get into it and the writing was flat. Especially in the first half, the characters felt stereotypical (the “mean girl,” the “popular” guy, etc). Still, this novel is a great talking point for Alzheimer’s, Cuban-American families, or bullying.
